Mother nature has a funny way of planning your life for you. Just as I thought we'd figured things out at a comfortable pace, our family discovered that we're expecting our second baby. This summer will be exciting for us; James turns 3 April 27, Noah will be busy as he tackles his business on his own, a new baby at the beginning of August, preschool come September. Aaah! Sometimes I wonder if I'm cut out for this working mom stuff; yes, taking care of children (mine and yours) is WORK; and other times I'm certain that I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. One of the joys of being self-employed is that there will be no relaxing, designated bonding time; no maternity leave or EI. Hence, I'm a little stressed about how things will pan out. My logic is this:
a) I don't get a break or "leave" from parenting James, so a couple of extra little bodies is not really a big deal.
b) Newborns are notoriously difficult; they don't eat or sleep like humans and consequently neither do their parents. I will be tired, frazzled, possibly impatient and grumpy and shouldn't inflict this sort of care on other people's children.
c) I need to make SOME money; it's either stay home with my kids and others, or get a job. Childcare for 2 children, even part time, will be a considerable expense; will I bring home enough money to make the sacrifice of bonding, regular nursing, an available parent, play time, home-cooked meals, fresh baking, security and routine for my children worthwhile?

As soon as I think I've decided one way or the other, I have some breakthrough that changes my mind. I'm waiting now; to see how I feel, to see how the money is, to see how many kids stay and how many move on. I will miss seeing all of them play together no matter what happens - even keeping one or two "extra" turkeys sounds more and more like a great idea everyday. I guess I'll just keep on hurrying up and waiting!

Happy New Year!

January 8, 2011
Wow, time flies. I can't believe how much all of my kiddos have grown and changed. Everyone is walking, talking, and asserting their independence! It's neat to watch how little groups form among them, how they interact, share, fight, negotiate things. Some days are great and some days are stressful, but all in all, this is where I want to be. I know that this year will be great!

We're in business!

September 6, 2010
Wow! September came out of the blue and I can't believe how well things have worked out. I officially opened my dayhome on September 1st and the little turkey's and I had a really great first couple of days. We've managed to merge the two potential schedule ideas that I had in mind to fit naps, meals, and outside time in at times that fit with what the kiddos need. Having almost a years difference in between some of the kids hasn't seemed to be an issue, and James has actually really loved ha...

Sad news

July 4, 2010

I'm very sad to say that I've lost one of my little turkeys. I found out on July 1st that his mama no longer needs childcare for him and so now I'm getting back to all of the mom's who I had to say "maybe" or "no" to. I'm sure I'll fill up the spot before the fall but the worry-wart in me imagines the worst-case scenario. No matter what, I still 3 little bodies for September and another looking to start in February.

Getting ready for the fall!

June 24, 2010
It's been a while since I've taken the time to sit down and update my little blog project. Things are busy at my house! I've managed to meet/interview three sets of parents and toddlers and am really excited to welcome Matthew, Reuben, Jacob and Makyn come September. It looks like we'll have a house full of boys! James and I are really looking forward to a few more playdates this summer so we can get to know everyone better :)

Things are coming along really nicely for the fall. I spent a weeke...

Birthday mayhem... over!

May 5, 2010
Wow - James' second birthday has come and gone in a whirlwind of family, presents, cake, mess, and noise. We celebrated quietly at home with spaghetti (one of Jammers favourite dinners - and a great way to get a ton of veggies into him :) and a gigantic ice cream cake. The weekend, however, was a different story. I had this great idea to invite probably everyone we know to come over for burgers, cake etc., and I think everyone showed up at the same time. My big plan was come and go anytime be...

Hey moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, brothers, sisters, and curious internet browsers! James and I have decided to start a little blog, to let you know whats going on in our world. I figure this is a good time to start and a good habit to get into - as a parent, I'm always curious about what my kid got up to while I was away.

What did he eat? say? learn? create? discover? break?
How did he feel? behave? sleep? play? co-operate?

A blog is a good way to keep up in real-ish time and to share our l...
